Movie Review | ‘Six Triple Eight’
Rating: ★★★★☆
Six Triple Eight is an incredible and moving historical film that focuses on a lesser-known yet important aspect of World War II history. Directed by Tyler Perry, the film chronicles the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — the only all-Black, all-female battalion to go overseas during the war. Their mission? To eliminate a colossal backlog of mail never sent, and, in so doing, boost morale for soldiers and civilians everywhere.
This story is one of resilience, camaraderie and determination at its core, and that is as true of Six Triple Eight as it is of the actual people who served. The film pulls audiences into the ceaseless tests of these pioneering women, from grappling with racism in the military to struggling with the grim realities of war. Despite these sadly less than ideal conditions, the battalion’s motto — “No Mail, Low Morale” — drives them on, highlighting the essential role they play in connecting soldiers with their loved ones.
Kerry Washington gives a star performance as the determined and inspiring Major Charity Adams, and the rest of the cast is no less extraordinary. Her performance strikes a brilliant balance between strength and vulnerability, rendering Adams a fascinatingly complex and relatable figure. Supporting turns by Oprah Winfrey, Susan Kelechi Watson and others bring depth to the ensemble, showing the different personalities that made the 6888th such a tough team.
Perry’s direction is a triumph of storytelling, knitting together moments of tension, heartbreak, and triumph into a cohesive story. The film’s production design and costuming takes viewers back to the 1940s, and the script successfully balances historical accuracy with an emotionally resonant drama.
But Six Triple Eight stumbles a little on pacing at times, and feels a bit drawn out and overdramatic in some scenes. These few moments, however, hardly lessen the impact of the film as a whole.
Not just a war movie, Six Triple Eight tells a powerful story of courage and the human spirit. It’s a stirring tribute to the women of the 6888th and their pathbreaking efforts, but it’s also a reminder of the value of celebrating neglected parts of our history.
Verdict: Essential viewing for fans of historical dramas and stories of unsung heroism.
