In a bid to incorporate former allies, President William Ruto unveiled a fresh wave of Cabinet appointments on December 19, 2024. The cabinet reshuffle saw the return of Uhuru-era Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who will now be entrusted with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. This vital portfolio will see him spearheading initiatives to uplift a sector that is the backbone of Kenya’s economy.

Lee Kinyanjui will now head the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, focusing on attracting investors and forging robust trade partnerships to bolster Kenya’s economic standing. Former Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo, has been tasked with steering the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, a pivotal role in advancing Kenya’s digital transformation.

    Additional Cabinet Reassignments

    Alongside these fresh appointments, the President has repositioned some seasoned Cabinet Secretaries to align with his vision:

    1. Salim Mvurya, formerly the CS for Investments, Trade and Industry, has transitioned to lead the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports.
    2. Kipchumba Murkomen takes over the influential Ministry of Interior, stepping up from the Ministry of Sports.

    Enhancing Kenya’s Diplomatic Footprint

    Diplomatic appointments also feature prominently in this reshuffle, with seasoned leaders positioned to champion Kenya’s global presence:

    1. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u has been named High Commissioner to Ghana, set to foster stronger ties with the West African nation.
    2. Ababu Namwamba, bringing his extensive experience, will serve as Permanent Representative to UNEP/UNON, advancing Kenya’s leadership in global environmental diplomacy.
    3. Dorothy Angote steps in as High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, strengthening relationships within Southern Africa.
    4. Dr. Andrew Karanja assumes the role of Ambassador to Brazil, enhancing Kenya’s engagement with Latin America.

    Driving State Corporations Forward

    In a push to revitalize public institutions, President Ruto has also appointed new leaders to key state corporations:

    1. Ndiritu Muriithi will chair the Kenya Revenue Authority, guiding crucial tax reforms to support economic growth.
    2. Anthony Mwaura takes the helm at the Kenya Rural Roads Authority, focusing on expanding rural infrastructure for equitable development.
    3. Kembi Gitura has been appointed chairperson of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital, where his leadership will shape healthcare delivery in the nation.
