The Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC) has confirmed the sinking of the cargo ship MV. HANIM in Kilwa’s Masoko Port. The accident did not cause any deaths or injuries. The ship was on its maiden voyage, from Mtwara Port to Zanzibar, and has a carrying capacity of 3,500 tons, but was carrying 3,150 tons of cement.
The initial cause of the accident is a fault in the ship hull on the forward starboard side, causing water to fill the water stability tanks on the starboard side, causing the ship to list to starboard and sink.
TASAC in collaboration with the Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA) and other government authorities are continuing the investigation to determine if there is another cause other than the ship’s hull to take legal action against anyone who caused the accident.
TASAC has advised the public to comply with the Laws, Regulations, Guidelines and Procedures for the Operation of Water Transport Vehicles, especially in the purchase of used ships, considering the age of the ship since its construction, conducting an Engine and Ship Bottom Survey, as well as knowing the ship’s stability and stability (Stability and Inclining Test) before purchasing and registering such ships in the country with the aim of protecting the lives of people and their property.
